Stories of Soroti

Yesterday was 2 weeks that we have been living at our home in Soroti. With all the many new things that we have experienced over the last couple weeks..it seems like a lot longer than that!

I have been sitting here trying to figure out what to write about..because there are SOOOO many things I would like to share. So, I am going to share a few stories of the people that we have been blessed to interact with.

Urias is our night watchman. He is a very bright Christian man and a very hard worker. He has joined us for dinner a couple of times and it has been a blessing. Urias works 5 days with us and then spends 2 days in the village with his family. He is hoping to find a home for his wife and 2 daughters closer to Soroti Town. Right now it takes him 6 hours on his bike to get home. It has been awesome to hear him listening to the proclaimer we are letting him use, through our screen door, in the dark. The proclaimer is an Audio Bible. We are talking to him about starting a listening group in his village. He has invited our family to his village on November 10. It will be an all day affair, with a traditional Ugandan Meal! (prayers that we don't get sick from the food..please)  He is so excited for us to meet his parents, wife, and two daughter...one of them only 2 weeks old!

Dorcas is our house helper. Our family loves her. She also comes 5 days a week to help with laundry (which is done by hand in a tub, rinsed and then hung to dry.....and then ironed to kill any lingering bugs) She also helps me in the kitchen. She wants me to teach her how to make banana bread next week. Dorcas asked me today if she could have my empty oatmeal container that we were getting rid of. She was so happy when I, of course, said yes..and she went on to tell me she was going to use it to put her millet or sugar in. I am so happy, she says. Dorcas has 4 of her own children and cares for 4 orphan children. Her husband is not working right now, so it has helped them greatly to have her working. She used her money from the last time we paid her to pay on the school fees they were behind on. We had a brief visit to her home and hope to visit again soon.

Miriam is one of many children that show up at our gate after school to play. She is a sweet girl who is very affectionate and always smiling. She doesn't greet like most of the other children do with a hand shake....she gives great big hugs. Miriam is about 12 years old. Her mother is a Muslim and her father is  a Christian who is not sure at this point if he wants to convert to Islam (at least that is what he said when we met him) Miriam says her mother has not been home for 3 months and her father is never home. She has an older sister who stays with her. She came to our home a couple days ago and asked if she could live with us. She said her father would not mind. This isn't something that we are used to hearing. So we prayed and I promised her that I would continue to pray for her and her family.

Our family is doing well. Two of our children told me they want to start homeschool! I am hoping in the next 2 or 3 weeks to start. Trayton has his first wipe out on his bike. Cuts here need more loving care as risk of infection is greater. Please pray that his wounds heal quickly. Our boys have been busy with the lizards, bow and arrows, sling shots, and new friends, and chickens. They also have been the ones struggling the most with missing friends and family. It is hardest at night...when they are trying to sleep. And then Trayton prayed tonite "thank you God for sending our family to Uganda and thank you for all the people that helped us be able to come". God is good.

Please pray for safety for our family as we are leaving at 6am to drive to Kampala tomorrow. We are following the Tiesenga family who is dropping their friends off at the airport. We need to purchase a propane tank for our oven, water cooler, and a frig for the guesthouse...along with some of the foods that we can't find in soroti......like Cheese, Lettuce, Cream Cheese, Bacon, Hot Dogs. Don't take Meijers for granted friends!!

God is so good. Our desire is that our every step is controlled by the Holy Spirit, that he guides and directs our every conversation with each special person He places in our path.  Oh, SO much more to write....but it will have to wait. Pictures to come.

Love,
Michelle

Hi Fishers! We've been enjoying your blog and Facebook updates! Thanks for taking the time to write. It helps us understand a little bit better what you're experiencing, and helps us pray more specifically. Our boys missed their friends, too, so I'll be praying especially for them. But how neat that at the same time they see the big picture. We miss seeing you at church, but are so thankful that you're right where God wants you to be!
